These Case Studies highlight the various successes, problems and continuing concerns of some SME in moving towards total RoHS compliance for their products and processes. Experiences gained during this processes should provide help to other European SMEs, operating with similar manufacturing processes and products, during their own transition to fully RoHS compliant status.

    The Company is a sub-contractor specialising in the manufacture of sub-assemblies. Typical products include industrial systems, such as gas & air monitoring equipment, gas burner controls and industrial boiler controls. Prosol is equipped for the mass-production of printed wiring board assemblies based on surface mount technology (SMT) and plated-through hole (PTH) designs.

    This Company is one of the major Polish printed circuit boards (PCBs) manufacturers, with the main profile in single-sided, double sided and multilayer rigid PCB?s. The PCBs manufactured in ELDOS are chiefly used in telecommunication (including car audio sets), cash registers, automotive and industrial automation, special microwave devices and even scientific equipment installed on board of satellites for sun physics investigation as well as medical equipment.

  • RWT (Radomska Wytwornia Telekomunikacyjna)
    This company is one of the telecommunication
    and information technology producers in Poland. Typical products there are network/fix cellular terminals, Cryptographic telephone sets, internet access systems and other telecommunication and IT devices. RWT is equipped for the massproduction of PCB assemblies mainly based on surface mount technology, by which 95% of the components are assembled by reflow soldering. Less applied is throughhole technology and wave soldering. As with a small part of production by hand soldering, it is adopted usually for repair, especially after wave soldering. Nowadays, RWT is a medium sized enterprise with around 200 employees. Besides the Polish market, RWT's business expands into Russia and Baltic countries.

  • Semicon Sp. z o.o.
    This company is a small sized Polish assembly who was founded in 1987. In 1997 Semicon established its first SMT assembly line and in 2003 introduced the wave soldering technology. The printed circuit boards processed by Semicon include single-sided, double-sided and multilayer boards which are used in broad fields. Semicon as an assembly enterprise has merely Polish customers whose final products are however sold besides Poland also to England, Australia, Canada and USA. Nowadays Semicon Sp. z o.o. is a core SME with 37 employees and with 1500 square meters workshop and has annual turnover of 3.3 million EUR. The company with its production facilities headquarters in Warsaw, Poland.

    The company operates two manufacturing facilities located in Ogre and Ventspils, Latvia. HANZAS Elektronika?s production technologies are SMT (surface mount technology) board-level assembly as well as THT (through-hole technology). SMD (surface mount devices) are assembled with reflow soldering equipment. As for the through-hole components, wave soldering and selective soldering are available. Hand soldering is essential part of production and repairing.
